Abstract
716,465. Aircraft undercarriages. BOEING AIRPLANE CO. July 22, 1952 [July 27, 1951], No. 18545/52. Class 4 An aeroplane has four alighting units attached to the fuselage arranged in pairs, one pair fore, the other aft, the retracting axes of each unit being inclined upwardly and outwardly so that when retracted the wheels lie in the vicinity of the plane of symmetry of the aircraft, a shock absorbing strut being provided. Referring to Fig. 4, the wheels 1 are mounted on a shock absorbing strut 2 arranged to swing about an axis 22 inclined upwardly and outwardly. Two such units are mounted on a reinforced bulkhead 91, one unit retracting forwardly and upwardly, and one rearwardly and upwardly. Referring to Fig. 3. the jack 3 retracts the strut 2 about axis 22. Struts 41 and 42 are adapted to lock the strut 2 in the retracted or extended position, being pivoted at 40. and having a p.n 44 mounted on twin levers 48 pivoted to strut 41 engaging a hook 45 on strut 42. Actuator 46 effects release of pin 44 moving it to a position remote from axis 40, enabling the hook 45 to clear the pin, and jack 3 to retract the unit, the axis indicated at 43 passing through opening 92 in bulkhead 91 before axis 40, and sufficiently far to enable struts 41 and 42 to straighten out again, when pin 44 re-engages in hook 45. Any suitable means may be employed to prevent the strut breaking the wrong way. Wing tip wheels may be provided in case of dangerous lateral tilt, and do not normally contact the ground.
