[Class 4] In transport planes of the type in which the freight-containing portion of the aircraft or hold may be separated from the main structure, - the plane is constructed so as to form with the totality of its essential elements (such as wings, engines, pilot's cock-pit, rear portion of the fuselage, fins and control surfaces) a complete unit 22, to the under-forward portion of which is fixed the detachable hold 12, which may be made to carry parts of the undercarriage as well as the controls thereof. In Fig. 1 is shown the unit 22 (unhatched) to the underforward portion of which the hold 12 (hatched) is connected by members such as 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 11 (see Fig. 3). Two main landing wheels 14, 15 are carried by the hold and their gauge is such as to make them fit for road use. Two side wheels 16, 17 (which may be retractable) are fixed to the wings 23 for transverse balancing when running on uneven ground or subjected to a beam wind. Wheels 18 are rigidly mounted on the hold and they may serve for the hold's travel by road or, if of larger gauge, be retractable into hold part 20 for towing the hold on a road by carrier-tractor 21, the side wheels 16, 17 not being then required ; if a narrow-gauge or single-track forward gear is provided, an ordinary tractor can be used. The connecting members for the hold admit of angular movements. When the hold has been detached, the unit 22 may be strengthened by the attachment of struts 26, 27. For attaching or detaching the hold, separate wheeled supports 30 for the wings may be used ; or the wing-tip wheels 16, 17 may be -made adjustable as supports when required.
