Abstract

509,574. Aircraft alighting - gear. GENERAL AIRCRAFT,. Ltd., WILLIAMS, D. L. H., and CROCOMBE, F. F. Nov. 28, 1938, No. 34633. [Class 4] In aircraft alighting-gear in which nose and main elements are situated respectively forwardly and rearwardly of the centre of gravity of the aircraft so that the tail of the aircraft is maintained normally clear of the ground, the nose element includes a pair of transversely spaced members supported on a single mounting permitting either or both castering and steering of the elements about an axis lying between the members. In one form, the nose landing gear comprises two wheels 15 supported on a common axle 16 mounted in a member 17 carried by the inner telescoping part 18 of a shock-absorber mounted in the aircraft structure by struts 23. The axle 16 trails behind the axis A, B of the shockabsorber. In a modification, the axle is mounted in a fork and the wheel spacing may be varied by changing a spacing member between the wheels. Specification .505,109 is referred to.
