Abstract

505,109. Aircraft alighting - gear. GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., WILLIAMS, D. L. H., and CROCOMBE, F. F. Nov. 4, 1937, No. 30282. [Class 4] In aircraft alighting-gear in which nose and main landing elements are disposed relatively to the centre of gravity of the aircraft such that. when the aircraft is resting on the elements its tail structure is maintained clear of the ground, the mounting of the nose element permits orientation so as to cause or permit a change of direction of the aircraft, means being provided to restrain or prevent such orientation. In one form, the alighting gear includes wheels 12 disposed rearwardly of the centre of gravity of the aircraft and a steerable and castoring nose wheel 11. The nose wheel is mounted in a fork 16 mounted on one part of a telescopic shock-absorber, relative rotation between the parts of which is prevented by links 17, 18. The shock-absorber is mounted for rotation in bushes 19, 20 and castoring is restrained by a cam-plate 27 having a depression 34 and engaging a compression spring 30. Rotation of the shock-absorber is further restrained by a brakeband 23 having an adjustable tensioning-device 24. Orientation of the wheel may be prevented by a locking-pin 35. In a modification, the shock-absorber projects forwardly and downwardly and a lock is arranged so that the shockabsorber is either connected with steering- mechanism or is positively locked.
