Abstract
900,019. Aircraft undercarriages. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. April 18, 1961 [April 26, 1960], No. 14600/60. Class 4. An aircraft undercarriage includes a freely telescopic leg 11, one part 12 of which is connected to the aircraft, the connection being made rigid when the leg is extended, e.g. by a bracing strut 28, the other part 13 of the leg being pivoted at 17 to the forward end of a bogie 20, and a strut 25, which may be a telescopic damper, pivoted at one end 23 to the bogie and at its other end to the aircraft or to leg part 11 at 26, the torque resisting elements 30 of the brakes of the front wheel or wheels 18 being attached to the leg part 11 and those of the brakes of the rear wheel or wheels 22 being attached to the bogie, and the connection 17 between parts 13 and 20 lies on a line (shown broken) passing through the rotational axis of the front wheel or wheels and through the effective ground contact point of the rear wheel (or through the line joining the effective ground contact points of twin rear wheels), the leg lies at an angle of 85 to 95 degrees to the line, and the axis of the strut 25 (also shown broken) cuts the line substantially at its mid point. In this way, the loads borne by the front and rear wheels are kept equal when the aircraft is stationary or braking. As described, the axle 17 serves as the front wheel axle and also pivots part 13 to the bogie. The brakes are of the disc type. An up-lock is provided for the leg.
