Abstract

877,505. Aircraft undercarriages. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. May 22, 1959 [May 27, 1958], No. 16907/58. Class 4. A main aircraft undercarriage component comprises two wheel mountings adapted for fixing to an aircraft in tandem one behind the other, one mounting being rigid and having a fixed axle carrying at least one yieldable wheel, and the other mounting being movable against the resistance of a shock absorber and having an axle carrying at least one yieldable wheel which, when the shock absorber is unloaded, lies below the wheel or wheels carried by the fixed axle, but which is movable under ground load from this lower position against shock absorber resistance to a level at which the wheel or wheels carried by the fixed axle also engages the ground. A pad 11 is attached to each lower corner of an aircraft fuselage (not shown) to enclose a tandem undercarriage each comprising a front bracket 16 socketted at 19 to a projection from a fuselage structural member and a rear bracket 17 similarly socketted at 21, the two brackets being connected by a beam 18. Bracket 16 carries a pivot 22 for a wheelsupporting arm 23 which.is locked in the downposition shown by a collapsible bracing strut 27, secured in its extended position by a lock 36 automatically freed by initial movement of a retraction jack 34. Bracket 17 carries a pivot 40 for a wheel-supporting arm 41 and a further pivot 51 for a bell-crank lever 49 which has an upper pivotal connection 52 for a retraction jack 54 and a lower pivotal connection for the body of a shock absorber 46, the piston rod of which is connected at 44 to arm 41. Reaction loads on the line of the shock absorber axis are taken by trunnions 57 which seat in a semi-circular recess 58 formed in bracket 17 and are retained therein by a pivoted latch 61 operatively connected with jack 54. With both undercarriages extended as shown the rear wheel 14 is below the front wheel 13 so that landing shocks are reacted by the rear wheel only, contraction of shock absorber 46 bringing wheel 14 into the chain dotted position 14<SP>11</SP> so that both wheels support the aircraft during ground running.
