Abstract
527,456. Undercarriages for aircraft. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and THORNHILL, P. W. April 12, 1939, No. 11119. [Class 4] The "fixed" and movable parts 13, 12 of a telescopic shock-absorbing wheel-carrying strut of an aircraft undercarriage are connected by links 24, 25, 27 to a stay 19 pivoted to the aircraft framework. The links 24, 25 form a bell-crank lever and are integral with a part 22. When the wheel receives a shock, its axle moves relatively to the strut in a substantially vertical locus 29. The upper end 15 of the strut is pivoted at 16 to the main spar, and to the "fixed" part 13 of the strut at 14. A double-acting hydraulic jack 35 is pivoted to the part 15 and serves for the retraction and extension of the strut. The rear wheels of an aircraft tricycle undercarriage may be supported in the manner described above so that, when taxying, the position of the centre of gravity of the aircraft relatively to the points of contact of the wheels with the ground is unaffected by shocks.
