Abstract
1,028,669. Aircraft undercarriages. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. Nov. 12, 1963 [Nov. 13, 1962; Nov. 16, 1962], Nos. 42889/62 and 43475/62. Heading B7G. A retractable aircraft undercarriage has a leg pivotally connected to the aircraft structure by links 16, 17 and a fluid pressure operated jack 26 pivotally connected to the aircraft structure and the leg for raising or lowering the aircraft by pivoting the leg about a hinge 18, to facilitate loading. A separate retraction jack 20 and the jack 26 is then connected to the leg by a link 30 which allows the leg to pivot about the hinge 18. The jack 26 contains an internal lock, and the link 30 is secured to the leg by locking means 33, 34 when the leg is not retracted. The leg may also be telescopic, and may be shortened or extended to vary the aircraft height further by withdrawing liquid from or introducing liquid into a shock absorber of the leg. As described, the undercarriage retracts forwardly (to the left in the figure), and pivots rearwardly to lower the aircraft, and the retraction jack has some lost motion so that it does not restrict the lowering operation. The invention may be applied to nose or main landing wheels. The movement of the tail of the aircraft may be accentuated by extending the main wheels and shortening the nose wheel, or vice versa.
