Abstract

640,741. Retractable undercarriages. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., COSTIGAN, F. J., and MORRIS, K. W. March 2, 1948, No. 6576. [Class 4] An undercarriage comprises twin wheels each on one of a pair of legs arranged to be retracted about fore-and-aft pivots by swinging laterally in opposite directions and upwardly into a well, a main leg carrying a wheel being arranged to be pivotally secured to the aircraft and a secondary leg carrying a wheel being pivotally secured to the main leg. In the form shown, the main leg 10 and the secondary leg 19 are pivoted together at 18 and carry shock absorbers 15 mounting wheels 14 and 20 respectively. The main leg is pivoted at 11 to the aircraft structure 12 and at 25 to one end of a breakable strut 24 also pivoted to the structure at 26. A radius rod 21 is pivoted to the structure 12 and to the leg 19 at 22. When the strut 24 is broken at 27 the pivot 11 is rotated to retract the undercarriage into the well 13. Fairings 31, 32 (Fig. 5, not shown) are connected by links to the legs 10 and 19 to cover the well 13 when the undercarriage is retracted.
