Abstract
565,052. Aircraft undercarriages. DOWTY, G. H. July 22, 1942, No. 10274. [Class 4] An aircraft landing element mounting comprises a box strut made of sheet material and a resiliently deformable articulated frame extending therefrom for connection to a landing element. As shown, a tapered channel- Section member 8 of sheet steel is welded to another sheet steel channel member to form a hollow box section which is strengthened at intervals by internal diaphragms 11, 12, 13. A lever 18 carrying a landing-wheel axle at its rear end is pivoted within the lower end of the member 8 and is connected at an intermediate point 23 to a shock-absorber 22 anchored to a pivot 24 extending across the member 8. The sides of the member 8 between the pivots 19, 24 are strengthened by thicker plates 25 welded thereto. These plates are extended forwardly as shown at 26 to provide anchorage for a tractor cable, and rearward extensions 27 form attachments for a jointed strut or other device for retracting the mounting. The upper end of the member 8 is plugged by a fitting 14 which is pivoted to the airframe. A machined spacer may be used to strengthen the strut near the pivots 19, 24. A standard fitting may be cut shorter from the top before fitting the end plug to suit a smaller aircraft. For large aircraft, two such members 8 are braced together by transverse plates secured to brackets 17 and the two levers 18 support the ends of the axle of a wheel placed between them. Fig. 7 shows a cross-section of an alternative construction comprising two identical stampings 31 welded together at 32. According to the Provisional Specification light alloy stampings may be used.
