Abstract

354,639. Motor vehicle steering-gear. BECKER, G. and MARUHN, H., 170, Berlinerstrasse, Charlottenburg, Berlin. Nov. 5, 1930, No. 33245. [Class 79 (v).] The steering wheels are so connected together that gyroscopic movements oppose and balance each other, so as to prevent oscillation and wheel wobble. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, oppositely-directed worm sectors s<1>, s<2> fixed to the stub axles of the wheels l<1>, l<2> mesh with right- and left - handed worms el, e<2> formed on a shaft w rotated for steering by the bevel gearing shown. The shaft is slidably-keyed in a sleeve m, and by adjusting nuts u<1> u<2> the sleeve may be moved on the shaft so as to adjust the parallelism or " toeing-in " of the wheels. Springs may be provided between the nuts and the sleeve so as to absorb road shocks. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the steering arms b<1>, b<2> are connected together by links p<1>, p<2> and a two-armed lever o, the lever o being slidable, as by screw gear t, to steer the wheels. Shockabsorbing springs f<1>, f<2> are provided. In the construction shown in Fig. 6 the stub axles are connected together by two worm sectors z<1>, z<2>, a right-and left-handed worm c and linkage a, b, the screw c being rotated to steer the wheels. In a modification one steering arm is directed forwardly and the other rearwardly from their respective stub axles, the two arms being connected by co-axial links rotated in opposite directions for steering by right- and left-handed screw gear.
