Abstract

314,964. Flettner, A. July 5, 1928, [Convention date]. Equalizing loads on wheels. -A motor vehicle is provided with main and auxiliary weight - supporting r o a d wheels. In the construction being steered by the auxiliary wheels, the main wheels shown in Fig. 5 main wheels 54 and auxiliary wheels 51 are mounted at the ends of members 59 pivoted on vertical axes 60 on an axle 64 supporting the vehicle through springs 65. The auxiliary wheels rotate on stub axles connected by vertical pivots to the rear ends of the members 59 and are steered by a rod 55, lever 56, link 57 and arm 58, a transverse link 63 connecting similar linkages for the two wheels. The axle 64 is connected to the arms 59 by horizontal as well as vertical pivots. The auxiliary wheels may be either in front of or in the rear of the main wheels. In the construction shown in Fig. 8 the arm connecting the main and auxiliary wheels is in two parts 81, 76 pivoted together at 74, the main wheel 78 being mounted on a stub axle 161 steerable about a vertical axis 82 on the part 81, this steering movement being caused by the deflection of the part 76 transmitted through a link 83 and arm 84. In the construction shown in Fig. 13 the arm 126 swivels about a pivot 125 on a member 129 rotatable on bearings 130 on the axle 128, the stub axle of the main wheel 116 being fixed to the arm 126 so as to swivel with it.
