Abstract
412,506. Road-vehicle undercarriages. PORSCHE GES., DR. ING. H. C. F., 24, Kronenstrasse. Stuttgart. Germany. Jan. 2. 1934. No. 179. Convention date, Jan. 4, 1933. [Class 108 (ii).] In order to lessen the strain on the frame of a power-driven vehicle having three or more independently sprung wheels in case an obstruction or depression in the road surface should be encountered, at least one wheel or a pair of wheels is supported in relation to the frame upon a jointed parallelogram or quadrilateral linkage swinging in the direction of travel, while the other wheels or pair of wheels are carried on swinging half-axles supported on the frame by struts also extending in the direction of travel. In the four-wheeled vehicle as shown, each of the front wheels 9, 9<1> is supported on a quadrilateral linkage having upper and lower links 10, 11 while the wheel centre or mid-point 18 of the rear link is lower than the actual swinging axis or mid-point a of the forward link. Each of the rear wheels 19, 19<1> is carried by a swinging half-axle 21 or 21<1> connected to a strut 20 or 20<1> that extends forwardly and is jointed to the frame 1 at 25 or 25<1>. In the case of a three-wheeled vehicle a single front wheel would be carried on the quadrilateral linkage. With such an arrangement if both rear wheels, say, pass over an elevation, the springs and mountings act to cause a simultaneous depression of both the front and rear of the frame relative to the front and rear axles, while, if a single wheel only encounters the elevation, the springs and mountings function to prevent torsional stresses being thrown upon the frame.
