Abstract

519,063. Road-vehicle undercarriages HUNT & TURNER, Ltd., and JAMIE, R. C. S. July 14, 1938, Nos. 20847/38 and 902/39. [Class 108 (ii)] An 'independent springing system for the wheels of road vehicles comprises upper and lower weight carrying spring elements and upper and lower abutments on the wheel carrying part and on the frame for distributing the forces transmitted between the wheel and the frame, the frame abutments which take the forces due to braking, accelerating and steering being rigidly incorporated in a sub-frame of built-up girder construction which may be fixed to the main frame or may oscillate against substantial spring resistance about a longitudinal pivot. In Figs. 1 and 6 the king-pin g secured to the stub axle boss b of a front wheel, has a tubular part g<1> slidable on the pin h secured to the bracket 9 and a part g which slides in an abutment h<2> on this bracket. A helical spring i is disposed between the bosses b, h' and in Fig. 1 a similar spring i' is disposed between the boss h<2> and a collar m on the king-pin g. In Fig. 6, the lower spring is a torsion rod 21 secured in a bracket on the side-frame member q and having an arm 20 connected to the collar m. The brackets 9 are secured to a sub-frame comprising transverse members n mounted by a boss o on a tubular pivot p extending between a pair of transverse members r, s1 connected to the side frame members q and disposed on either side of the sub - frame. Strong springs t are disposed between the sub-frame and the members q. The springs i and i<2> or 21 share the vehicle weight and with the springs t take up vertical shocks. Horizontal forces in the longitudinal and transverse direction due to braking, steering and accelerating are taken by the abutments h' h<2> on the'sub-truck frame. In a modification for a rear axle, Fig. 5, the axle 45 passes through an axle box 28 to which are secured pins 30 slidable in abutments 29, 31 on a sub-truck frame. Springs 26, 33 are disposed between the axle-box 28 and abutments 29 and between abutments 32 on the pins and the abutments 31. The sub-truck frame is rigid with the main frame and comprises longitudinal members 24, 25 and transverse members r', s' secured to the side members q, q<1>. The axle 45 which is divided as usual by the differential gear is provided also with universal joints to permit the independent movement of the axle ends. A further modification comprises a similar arrangement to that of Figs. 1 and 6 for a rear driven axle, front and rear pivots for the subtruck frame being provided on the differential casing and mounted on front and rear transverse bearers secured to the side members q, and the propeller shaft passing through the front pivot. Two pairs of springs are provided for each wheel in this case as in Fig. 5.
