Abstract
935,715. Convertible aircraft. BOEING CO. April 18, 1961, No. 14022/61. Class 4. An aircraft 20 has nacelles 32, 33 pivotally carrying power units 35, 36 operating tractor and pusher propellers 41 respectively; the units pivot about axes 38 to a vertical or horizontal position; in the vertical position the lines of thrust of the units pass through a point above the centre of gravity of the aircraft for stability. The power units are arranged symmetrically with respect to the aircraft's centre of gravity and longitudinal axis. On failure of one unit, the corresponding unit in the plane through the failed unit and aircraft centre of gravity is automatically or manually deenergized or throttled back to preserve balance. The yokes 39 supporting the power units are rotatable about collars 40 on the nacelles to produce or counteract pitch and roll which can also be produced by adjusting the thrust of appropriate power units. The aircraft may have one, two or three sets of wings. In Fig. 11, the units are rotated by a motor 44 via shafts 45, 46, nut and screw mechanism 48, 49 and cables 50. Motor 44 also operates stall delaying flaps via clutch 52, gears 53 and screw and nut mechanism 54, 55, 56. For short take off and landing the powers units are rotated less than 90 degrees.
