Abstract
935,656. Controlling aircraft. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 17, 1961 [Nov. 18, 1960], No. 39835/60. Class 4. A high-speed slender wing air craft, in which the leading edges are swept back at an angle of at least 60 degrees from a spanwise line and the aspect ratio does not exceed 2, is provided with a pail of nose flaps 10 hinged to the fuselage 1 about spanwise hinge line 11 and connected by a horse shoe bridge member 13 attached to a pair of jacks 14, the flaps normally being aligned with strakes 12 on the forward part o: the fuselage. The trailing edge o: the wing carries flaps 6, 7 inboarc and outboard of engine nacelles 8 the flaps 6, 7 being deflected downward simulataneously with upward deflection of the nose flaps 10 to balance the resulting nose-up pitching moment. They provide pitch control when operated in unison and roll control when operated differentially. Fluid pressure control apparatus, operated by separate control members, is described to enable the flaps 6 and 7 to be operated alone both in unison and differentially to control the aircraft and to simultaneously pivot flaps 10 upwards and flaps 6 and 7 downwardly during a landing approach to increase the lift of the wing.
