Abstract

993,731. VTOL and STOL aircraft. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 18, 1963 [Jan. 22, 1962; Feb. 28, 1962], Nos. 2318/62 and 7908/62. Heading B7G. An aircraft is provided with lifting gas turbine jet engines 20 (Fig. 2) arranged in fairings on the sides of the fuselage, the engines being disposed horizontally when not in use. The fairings may also accommodate the retracted undercarriage 14. The engines are pivotable about axes inclined in the transverse plane to the horizontal, so that their thrust has an inward component (see Fig. 4, not shown). When in their inclined position (Fig. 5), their intakes project from the fairings to receive ram air. The engines are adjustable to provide rearward or forward components of thrust and have doors 29, 30 hinged to them to seal against surfaces 31. Pitch and roll control are provided by elevons 23 and by nozzles 19 in the wing tips and in the nose and tail, supplied with air bled either from the main jet propulsion engine 9 or through tappings 24 on the lift engines. In another embodiment (Figs. 8-10, not shown), an aircraft suitable only for short takeoff and landing has lift engines only ahead of the centre of gravity, and has trailing edge blown flaps, preferably supplied with air from the lift engines, so that a lift engine failure would result in a reduction in the nose down pitching movement due to the flaps. The aft part of the fairings could be used for fuel or stores.
