Abstract

1416342 Aircraft wings; space shuttles L A SENHENN 5 Feb 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5288/72 Headings B7G and B7W An aircraft intended for use as a space shuttle comprises a fuselage 10 which carries foreplanes 11 and extends from a conical nose portion into an aft portion which carries main wings 12 and houses a plurality of rocket propulsion units 15 and braking propulsion units enclosed by covers 25. There are dorsal and ventral fins 21, 22, stub tail planes 23, 24, nacelles 16 housing main undercarriage units 17, a nacelle 20 for a front undercarriage unit and a cockpit 19. The wings are planar and wings 11 have an adjustable leading edge portion 29, the wings 12 having similar portions 34, 35. For vertical rocket-propelled ascent the leading edge portions are planar with their respective wings but during re-entry through the atmosphere the portions 29 are hinged upwardly and portions 34, 35 are hinged downwardly to give respectively a positive and negative pitching moment.
