Abstract
1,209,290. Very large aircraft. A. P. PEDRICK. 1 June, 1970, No. 24302/70. Heading B7W. An aircraft capable or carrying at least 1000 passengers comprises the body structure 1, port main wing 3 and tail plane 5, and tail fin 29, of one Boeing 747 aircraft, and the body structure 2, starboard wing 4 and tail plane 5, and tail fin 30, of another Boeing 747 aircraft, the two Boeing 747 aircraft bodies being held together by a bridging structure 7 at the nose and a common tail plane 20 at the tail, additional propulsive power units 13, 14, 15 being suspended from a beam 16 bridging the two main Boeing 747 bodies, and a central position 8 for the aircraft captain, and crew, being provided centrally above the main bridging nose structure. The aircraft is constructed as a flying boat, by the removal of the undercarriage wheels and mounting structure from the Boeing 747 bodies, and the attachment thereto, at the base, of expandable members (28, Fig. 2, not shown) of rubber, or like material, running longitudinally, that may be deflated to reduce drag in flight, but expanded pneumatically to give buoyancy for landing and take off. The bridging structure 7 includes a nose cabin 24, cinema 9 and restaurant 10. There are hinged jet deflectors behind the units 13, 14, 15. Fan wings 21, 22 as in Specification 1,195,946 are provided, and may be of carbon fibre sheet. Storage spaces 31, 32 may deploy stabilizing parachutes during descent. In a modification, the bridging structure is of aerofoil cross-section, incorporates a third Boeing 747 body above and ahead of the other two, and has four propulsive power units, fan wings being provided behind the wings and tail planes.
