Abstract
464,607. Vibratory propellers for aircraft. OWEN, B. June 10, 1936, No. 16196. Convention date, June 13, 1935. [Class 4] In an aeroplane or the like in addition to the ordinary supporting wings one or more pairs of wings are arranged to project laterally from the fuselage and are actuated mechanically with a part-rotary part-reciprocatory movement. As shown in Fig. 2, a wing 2 is formed at its root with an arm 4 carried through the intermediary of a flexible joint by a longitudinally disposed link 6 one end of which is slotted to embrace a fixed pivot 12, and the other end provided with a bearing 7 to receive a driving crank or eccentric 8 ; the inner end of arm 4 is located in a fixed flexible bearing 5. Crank 8 is formed on an engine driven shaft 9 which is common to one pair of wings. The flexible joints comprise metal liners connected to their respective housings by rubber or rubber and fabric bushes, and whilst permitting universal movement to arm 4 do not allow of its rotation. Pivot 12, crank-shaft bearings 10 and universal joint 5 are carried by a frame 17, Fig. 3, which is angularly adjustable by the worm gearing shown to alter the mean angle of incidence of the vibratory wing.
