[Class 4] In an aeroplane having oscillating wings 12, the wings are connected by ball-and-socket joints 5 to a common driving shaft 4 to which is fixed members 6 having inclined faces 7 adapted through the intermediary of ball bearings to contact with plates 8 which carry the wings and are reciprocated by the same manual or power mechanism that rotates the shaft 4, to adjust the incidence of the wings during their oscillation. As shown the wings are secured to the plates 8 by means of sockets 11 and are driven from pedals 45 through chain and spur gearing. The plates are reciprocated from a sprocket wheel 43 through cranks 16, connecting- rods 22 and carriages 19 having sockets 23 in which slide rods 24 connected to the discs through pivots 25. A control-surface 32 is adjustable from a steering column 27 through bevel gears 28 and a shaft 26. The surface is mounted on a ball joint 33 having a slot in which engages a bifurcated end of the shaft 26. A toothed segment 35 in the slot engages a segment 30 and provides means for moving the surface up or down by means of a lever 37 through a link 36. To facilitate rapid manoeuvring manually operated clutches are interposed between the sprocket wheel 43 and the cranks 16.
