Abstract
461,010. Propelling aircraft. BAYNES, L. E. Aug. 8, 1935, No. 22448. [Class 4] A propelling system particularly for light aircraft comprises at least two lateral airscrews carried by a hollow stub wing which projects fixedly on opposite sides of the fuselage, and is adapted to carry extensions with which to form a supporting wing proper, each airscrew being driven by a power plant mounted at or adjacent the centre of the wing span through power transmission means situated in the stub wing. As applied to a high wing cantilever monoplane, wing 1 is detachable at joints 2 (in halves) from the top of the fuselage. A fixed stub wing 4 extends laterally on either side of the body and forwardly to main spar 5 of the wing proper. Stub wing 4 accommodates two airscrew shafts 6 journalled in bearings carried by spars 7, 8, each shaft carrying a pusher airscrew 9. The central part of stub-wing 4 houses in the manner described in Specification 460,975, an engine 10 which drives shafts 6 through transmission means 12 which may comprise belt or chain gear, or shaft and bevel gearing, the arrangement being in each case such that a reduction in rate of revolution is effected between the engine and airscrew shafts.
