Abstract
366,540. Aircraft with adjustable rotary wing systems. CHILLING- WORTH, R., 4706, 4th Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 2, 1930, No. 23343. [Classes 4 and 114.] A rotary wing system for aircraft comprises blades 1 pivoted about inclined axes 6 formed as an angular frame so that when their roots 2, which are pivoted about parallel axes 8a on a similar frame 8, are moved along the propeller shaft the pitch of the blades is varied. Groups of propellers revolving in the same or opposite directions and independently or simultaneously controlled may be mounted on an aircraft, Fig. 7, showing two propellers mounted above and below an aircraft body and simultaneously controlled and driven. The axes 6 are formed as a frame supported by posts 7 from a driving wheel 5, Fig. 5, or a plate 22, Fig. 7, mounted on a hollow shaft 4, and the roots 2 of the blades are pivoted about the sides of a similar frame 8 splined to the shaft 4. The frame 8 can be moved axially on the shaft by a collar 28 connected to a shaft 9 passing through the shaft 4 and screwed to engage a nut controlled by the pilot. As shown in Fig. 7, the two shafts 9 have opposite handed screws engaging a nut 24 which can be rotated by worm gear to vary the pitch of the blades, and the shafts 4 ,are driven by the bevel gear shown from a common engine. Two or more blades may be used and the axes 6 may be at any angle to the blade axes but preferably at 45. Hydraulic means may replace the screwed shafts 9.
