327,881. Johnson, J. C. May 3. 1929. Helicopters; propelling; controlling.-An aeroplane having a tractor propeller at one end of the fuselage 10 and laterally extending wings 11 has propellers 14 fitted beneath each wing substantially midway of the chord and adapted to produce an upward thrust. The plane of action of the propellers may be adjusted to obtain a horizontal component of the thrust. The propellers 14, Fig. 3, are driven from an engine 29 through universally-jointed shafts 24 - - 27 and bevel gears 22, 23. The propeller shaft 21 and its bearings are carried in a housing 16 mounted on trunnions 17 coaxial with the drive shaft 24. A toothed rack 30 secured to the housing 16 meshes with a gear wheel 31 carried at one end of a shaft 32 which may be rotated by the pilot through a worm 34 and worm-wheel 33 to vary the plane of action of the propellers 14. The propeller drive shafts may be housed within the wing as shown in Fig. 2, or carried in brackets beneath it. The propellers 14 are of large diameter and flat pitch and are rotated at slow speed in opposite senses.
