Abstract

788,314. Jet propelled aircraft. HOWARD, H. A. Nov. 23, 1955 [Sept. 27, 1954], No. 27826/54. Class 4. A jet propelled aircraft having a main engine 1 housed in the fuselage 2, has an auxiliary engine 4 mounted on each wing-tip for rotation about an axis transverse to the wing and engine to facilitate directional control, landing and takeoff. Each engine 4 is secured to a shaft 9 mounted in bearings 7, 10 and 11 in the respective wing and is adapted to carry fuel and ignition lines 15. The inner end of each shaft carries a toothed gear 12 engaged by a pinion 13 driven by a motor 14 which may be electric or hydraulic. The engines 4 may be moved in unison or differentially by the interposition of a differential gear between pinions 13 or two motors may be used. To assist in the angular deflection of the engines 4 deflector vanes or the like may be provided to divert part of the jet and give it a component in the direction of rotation required. It is stated that angularly dajustable engines may be mounted in recesses in the trailing edges of the wings or above or below the wings. The main engine 1 may be pivoted.
