Abstract

666,744. Helicopters. KUSSE, F. C., and KUSSE. H. G. Oct. 4, 1949, No. 25477/49. Classes 4 and 114. A helicopter sustaining rotor comprises control means for varying the rotor blade pitch, propellers mounted on the rotor blades, power means driving the propellers to rotate the rotor, and means for varying the pitch of the propellers, the rotor pitch control means and the propeller pitch control means being interconnected. As shown, propellers 34, Fig. 2, are mounted on gear boxes 32 carried by tubular shafts 21 attached to a central rotating gear box 16. Engines mounted on the fuselage, Fig. 1 (not shown), drive the propellers 34 through bevel gears and shafts 30 within the tubes 21. The pitch of the propeller blades 41, Fig. 3, is varied by axial movement of a sleeve 43 mounted non- rotatably and coaxially with the driving shaft 39. Circumferential grooves 44 in the sleeve engage a spur wheel 46 rotating with the propeller hub 40 and geared to worm-wheels 42 on the blade roots. The rotor blades 20 are hingedly mounted on the tubes 21 and their pitch is adjusted cyclically by a spherically mounted swashplate. Change of rotor blade pitch is transmitted by rods 52, 51 to the sleeve 43 and hence results in a change of propeller blade pitch. U. S. A. Specification 1,924,192 is referred to.
