Abstract

322,183. Miller, J. May 29, 1928. Propelling; wings, construction of.-An ornithopter is supported and propelled by two wings which extend and collapse as they are angularly oscillated by rods connected at their inner ends to rotating cranks and sliding in pivoted sleeves on the body. Each wing comprises fabric secured to a framework composed of the parallel linkages shown, two members 3, 6 of which are connected by universal joints 5, 7 to the fuselage. A rod 14 hinged to another member 10 of the wing framework passes slidably through a sleeve 16, trunnioned at 17, and is connected at its other end to a crank pin 18 carried by an arm on a toothed wheel 19. This wheel engages a toothed wheel 26 on a shaft driven by chain gearing from a lay shaft 28 which is driven by chain gearing from a shaft 41. A crank pin 43 connected to this shaft drives a rod 44 which actuates the other wing. The shaft 41 is driven as shown from an electric or other motor 33. The end connections of the rods 14, 44 may be adjustable.
