Abstract
571,592. Aeroplanes. MARTIN, J., and MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd. Feb. 24, 1944, No. 3440. [Class 4] A monoplane of the type in which the engine 4 is disposed to the rear of the pilot's cabin 11 and in which the airscrew is driven by. an extension shaft 6 passing through the cabin, has the radiator .and oil cooler 15 and petrol tank 5 placed between the cabin and engine, the rear of the cabin being in advance of the leading edge of the wing 2. In the arrangement shown, the petrol tank and engine are disposed between the leading and trailing edges of the wing. The driving shaft 6 extends through the petrol tank and radiator to a reduction gear-box 7, and is supported by a bearing 6a in the cabin. Air intakes 19, 21, for the radiator and engine supercharger are provided below the fuselage. The arrangement enables the engine and various accessories to be placed in line along the longitudinal axis of the machine, and to be protected by a compact arrangement of armouring.
