361,246. Mounting aeroplane engines and propellers. GRULICH, K., 152, Kurf³rstendamm, Halensee, Berlin. March 31, 1931, No. 9768. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1930. [Class 4.] Aeroplanes with pusher airscrews f have engines b, with underhung cylinders or other means for obtaining the highest possible position of the driving shaft, mounted in the upper surface of the wing and connected by shafts e to the airscrews which are located as high above the trailing edge of the wing as possible. As shown the engines b are mounted in chambers b in front of a gangway c through the wing. Alternatively the engines may be mounted in chambers behind the gangway but in this case certain engines may be mounted as shown in order to prevent the machine from being tail heavy. Couplings g, h both radially and axially flexible are inserted at the ends of the shafts e and one of these is made releasable to enable the propeller to rotate freely should the engine stop. The projecting parts are covered with streamlined casings i which increase the speed of the airflow over the rear upper surface of the wing. Other compartments in the wing accommodate passengers, fuel, and freight.
