Abstract

574,347. Propelling aircraft. ARM STRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd. SIR W. G., and LLOYD, J. May 12, 1944, No 9171. [Class 4] An aircraft propelling system comprises a pusher airscrew arranged in parallel with a reaction jet supplied from an internal-combustion turbine plant. In the arrangement illustrated, a combustion turbine unit 13 is mounted within the wing and disposed transversely of the machine, the exhaust being discharged through a duct 19 terminating in an opening 20, and contra-rotating airscrews 28 are driven by the turbine through spur reduction gearing 22, 23, balanced bevel gearing 24, shaft 25, and further spur reduction gearing at the end of the shaft 25. A tractor airscrew may be fitted on a forwardlyextending extension of the shaft 25. Boundary layer air is supplied to the turbine compressor through slots 15 in the upper and lower wing surfaces. Alternatively, or in addition, air may be supplied through openings at the leading edges of the wings.
