Abstract

1,211,081. Jet propelled aircraft. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. 22 April, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23373/67. Heading B7G. [Also in Division F1] An aircraft has forward thrust provided by two gas turbine-engines (which may be turbojet, by-pass or turboprop engines, and may be mounted on the wings) and by a ducted fan 20 rotated (e.g. via a shaft 21) by a turbine 22 supplied with compressed air from the gas turbine engines via a duct 13 which contains combustion equipment (e.g. burners 35 and flame stabilizers 36) capable of heating the compressed air. The ducted fan 20 may be mounted at the rear end of the aircraft fuselage 12, air being drawn through an annular duct 26 between the fuselage and a double-walled annular member 27, the compressed air powering the turbine 22 passing through hollow vanes 30 to flow out between the double walls of the member 27. The rear tip 25 of the fuselage may either be carried by vanes 28 from the member 27, or be integral with and rotated with the fan 20. In the event of failure of the ducted fan unit, shutters 38 and 45 may be swung to the positions shown in dot-dash lines to isolate the unit. Thrust reversal may be effected by using variable pitch blades on the fan 20.
