Abstract

913,312. Jet propelled aircraft. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. May 1, 1961 [May 6, 1960], No. 16195/60. Class 4. A jet propulsion engine for an aircraft has a jet pipe 17 terminating in a first propulsion nozzle 18, and a branch exhaust duct 35 branching off jet pipe 17 and terminating in a second propulsion nozzle from which the jet gases may be discharged, the second nozzle comprising a frame member 44 which carries a plurality of jet deflector vanes 52 which extend parallel to each other and means for moving frame member 44 relatively to its branch exhaust duct so as to vary the direction in which deflector vanes 52 carried by frame member 44 deflect the jet gases. Extending downwardly from each wing of an aircraft is a strut 10 which supports two nacelles 11, within each of which is mounted a by-pass jet propulsion engine 12 comprising low and high pressure compressors 13, 14, combustion equipment 15 and high and low pressure turbines 16. Passage 19, receiving compressed air from compressor 13, is arranged to communicate by means of a valve mechanism, with a plurality of angularly spaced apart pipes 20, which communicate with jet pipe 17 downstream of turbines 16, and with a plurality of angularly spaced apart passages 21, which constitute a volute assembly 22 from which air may be supplied via conduits 23 to attitude control nozzles on the aircraft. The valve member 24 has a plurality of obturating members (not shown) spaced apart by a similar amount to the spacing of pipes 20, and also has a plurality of angularly spaced apertures, each one of which is between each adjacent pair of obturating members. Member 24 may be rotated by a motor 33 to positions in which either all the by-pass air is passed through pipes 20 to jet pipe 17 or only part of the by-pass air flows through pipes 20 and the remainder passes through passages 21 to the control nozzles. Mounted within jet pipe 17 on trunnions 38 is a valve member (not shown) which is movable by a ram 36a between the positions in which all the exhaust gases pass either through duct 35 or through the downstream portion of pipe 17 to nozzle 18. At the downstream end of each duct 35 in a frame member 44 having aerofoil shaped deflector vanes 52 and rotatable with respect to duct 35 by means of a motor 53. By rotating frame member 44 from the positon shown in Fig. 4, in which the exhaust gases are vertically downwardly directed the gases may be deflected forwardly or rearwardly. In an alternative assembly of deflector vanes, Figs. 5, 6, 8 (not shown), the support members for the vanes are mounted so that they are able to expand lengthwise when heated by the gases passing therethrough, and the vanes themselves, are able to expand lengthwise by means of sliding joints on their support members. Specification 900,603 is referred to.
