Abstract

1,203,853. Jet propulsion plant; turbines. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. May 12, 1969, [May 13, 1968], No. 22627 / 68. Headings F1J and FIT In a lift fan unit having fan blades 40 driven by a tip turbine 44 supplied with driving gas through a scroll having guide blades 48, the latter are provided over at least a sector of the scroll with control vanes 50 disposed at the entry to the flow passages between the blades 48 and pivotal into a position in which they block the flow passages. The sector of the scroll having vanes 50 is of between about 70 and 140 degrees, the vanes being controlled by way of radial shafts 59 from a central unit 58 in a fairing 42. The unit 58 comprises a toothed rack engaging pinions on the shafts 59 and arranged so that the vanes 50 progressively open or close in sequence from one end of the sector to the other, as shown by vanes 50a, b, c in Fig.4. A lift fan unit may be mounted in each wing of an aircraft, Fig.1 (not shown), the tip turbine 44 of each unit being supplied with driving gas through respective branches 24, (26) of the bifurcated exhaust duct (22) of a common gas turbine type gas generator (14) mounted in the aircraft fuselage. The two lift units are controlled manually or automatically from a central apparatus (60) to permit attitude control of the aircraft. Additional lift units may be disposed in the aircraft fuselage. The lift units may also be used in hovercraft.
