An aircraft includes one or more ducts with their axes substantially perpendicular to the level flight plane of the aircraft, each containing a coaxial flow fan, shaft driven from a turbine supplied at will with motive fluid from the jet pipe of a jet propulsion plant of the aircraft, the duct or ducts being arranged so that the total lifting effort of the ducts is applied near the centre of gravity of the aircraft. Fig. 1, shows one arrangement in which the exhaust gases of each of two pairs of gas turbines 3 can be diverted from nozzles 11 to supply a plenum chamber 8 feeding a turbine 4. A large ducted fan 1 and two smaller fans 2 are driven by the turbines through shafting and bevel gears. Normally the resultant lift from the fans and the exhaust of the turbines 4 passes near the centre of gravity of the aircraft. Intake guide vanes in the fan ducts are adjustable in angle of attack to vary the lift of each fan, the lift of one fan 2 being varied relatively to that of the other for control in roll, and the lift of both fans 2 being varied relatively to that of fan 1 for control in pitch. Other arrangements are illustrated in which three, four, or five fans are driven by a turbine supplied with motive fluid from one or two jet propulsion engines.
