Abstract

301,310. Bauer, G. Nov. 22, 1928. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 27, 1928]. Driving arrangement for paddle-wheels. - Paddle wheel ships are driven through gearing by one or more high speed reciprocating engines in combination with one or more exhaust steam or exhaust gas turbines. The internal combustion engines may be used in combination with exhaust steam turbines, steam being raised in an auxiliary boiler heated by the exhaust gases. The turbines transmit their power through mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic gearings and couplings. The reciprocating engine 1, Fig. 1, and turbine 2 drive the cross shaft 8 of the paddlewheel through gearing 3, 4 and 5, 6, 11, 7 respectively, the element 11 being a hydraulic coupling. A hydraulic coupling 12 may be inserted in the final drive. The reciprocating engine may drive direct instead of through gears 3, 4. In another arrangement two reciprocating engines 13, 14, Fig. 3, drive a transverse shaft which is geared by a helical gearing 20, 21 to the cross shaft 8 and a single exhaust turbine 15 only is employed. In another arrangement, Fig. 5, duplicate, sets of reciprocating engines and turbine drive respectively cross shafts 12, 12' situated low down and on either side of the axis of a main driving pinion 21 on the paddle wheel shaft. Similar installations are employed for driving through gearing or coupling rods, a paddle wheel or paddle wheels placed at the stern of a vessel. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also another form, Fig. 6 (Cancelled), wherein the reciprocating engine 40 is placed transversely and transmits its drive through hydraulic couplings 43, 44 and connecting rods 41, 42 to a cranked paddle shaft, and turbine 45 is also placed transversely but on the opposite side and drives through gearing. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
