Abstract

265,627. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Herr, H. T.). Feb. 6, 1926, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Driving - arrangements for screw propellers.-A ship propulsion plant comprises a number of cylinders arranged about the main shaft driving it directly or through transmission gears, the centre lines of the cylinders forming a. polygon about the centre line of the shaft. The cylinders are carried wholly or are partly supported by the shaft, and the structure is presented from rotating by arms secured to the ship with or without spring restraint. The engine is preferably an internal-combustion engine, and may be associated with steam turbines. The propellers 12, Fig. 1, are driven by shafts 13 on which are disposed the frames of the engine units 21, the crankshafts 22 of which carry a gear wheel 23 meshing with a wheel 24 which can be clutched to the shaft. The engine is an internal-combustion engine of the opposedpiston type. Associated with the drive are steam turbines 17, 18, clutches 25 of the magnetic type being provided to bring in or cut-out either of the sets of engines. An arm 38, Fig. 4, is anchored to prevent rotation of the unit and may be connected with a torque meter. A supporting arm 40 for taking part of the weight is fitted, adjustment of the spring 42 providing for variation of the amount so taken. In arrangements where no turbine is provided, the internal-combustion engine may drive the shaft through the reduction gear or two engines may be coupled in common to a second reduction gear.
