Abstract

332,124. McNeil, P. E. Oct. 1, 1928, [Convention date]. Screw propellers; propeller shafts, arrangement of; propeller guards.-Two screw propellers are arranged coaxially so that the second propeller is rotated in the same direction as by utilizing the rotational or angular component of the pressure exerted by the blades of the primary screw element, and produces a thrust supplementary to that produced directly by the primary screw element. The screw propeller e is keyed on a shaft, and is of greater pitch and smaller diameter than a normal propeller designed for working under the same conditions. Arranged to rotate freely upon the extended boss i of propeller e is another propeller f of large diameter. The propeller f is designed, up to a radius approximately equal to that of propeller e, on a rotor principle and is rotated as described by the propeller c, the stream being directed aft after leaving the rotor blades. The remaining portions of the blades of propeller f are designed as driving propeller blades and the thrust is transmitted to the propeller shaft through the thrust bearing o. In a modification the propeller e is mounted on a hollow shaft and the propeller f upon an internal solid shaft, the thrust bearing being arranged within the ship.
