Abstract

Screw propellers; driving-arrangements for screw propellers.-A screw propeller or motor of the type wherein the blades are carried by an inner and an outer ring is provided with gear teeth on the periphery of the outer ring and geared to a power shaft or to a similar screw wheel. The blades b are secured to an inner ring f and outer ring c, the motor ring having teeth m which drives the ring of the propeller unit. The outer ring runs in a ball bearing n, the supporting ring n<1> being carried by struts on an aeroplane or other vessel or vehicle to be propelled. The combined motor and propeller units may be pivotally supported on a horizontal axis between the planes of a biplane and adjustable thereon to provide for horizontal or vertical traction, or on a vertical axis for steering ships to port or starboard. When an aeroplane is falling the screw and motor units are turned down in opposite directions on the pivots. The planes may be cut away above and below the propellers. The motors and screws may be placed in tunnels running longitudinally through a ship and are geared by their external teeth to each other, or the motors may drive auxiliary plant. Sluice valves are fitted to the tunnels and the plant is mounted on a frame withdrawable sideways into the ship for repairs. The geared rim may be coupled to a speed indicating device.
