Abstract

364,207. Detachable propelling installations. COOPER, F., Verulam, Hythe, Hampshire. Oct. 11, 1930, No. 30505. [Class 114.] Detachable power transmission for screw propellers for use on boats and aircraft is such that the propeller may be moved about a vertical axis for steering, and during the reverse drive is locked to its support, but during the forward drive is free to swing upwardly in a rearward direction if obstacles are encountered. A bracket 6 adapted to be attached to the transom of a boat or airship gondola carries in bearings a driving shaft 1 which couples the engine through a bevel wheel 7, a bevel wheel 8 on a cross shaft 9 and a bevel wheel 17 with a depending shaft 18 which is in turn geared to the propeller shaft 28. The depending shaft 18 is carried in a casing 21, 22 which is mounted in a support 16 so as to be rotatable by bevel wheels 20, 37 from a bevel wheel 36 on a hollow shaft 4 at the inboard end of which is a sprocket 35 or other steering mechanism. On rotation of the steering gear the whole casing rotates and in the reverse position a shoulder 41 engages with a ledge 42 whereby the mechanism is locked against movement about the axis 9. In the forward running position, however, there is no locking and should the skeg 33 encounter resistance, the depending part of the mechanism can tilt about the axis 9 and the drive connection 17, 8 remains unbroken. For the purpose of guiding the parts in this tilting operation, the upper part of the support 16 carries a part cylindrical extension 13 which slides inside a cylindrical barrel 11, 12 which is supported on the frame 6 and encloses the upper gearing. If desired a lever may be fitted so that the tilting movement of the propeller may be effected or assisted manually.
