Abstract

398,531. Detachable propeller unit. COGGINS, T. H., 44, Orchard Hoad, E rdington, Birmingham. March 12, 1932, No. 7400. [Class 114.] In a detachable propeller unit a casing a on the driving mechanism is carried on pintles a<4> whereby the apparatus can be readily assembled, but the pins are disposed so that the unit cannot be swung for steering. At the lower end of the casing a is mounted a tubular member c which carries the final drive for the propeller d, a skeg e, and a rudder f. This tube is adapted to be rotated by a rod g which passes through a bracket o and can be moved by the tiller s. In addition to swinging for steering, the lower part of the unit can telescope into the tube a on meeting an obstruction, and for this purpose the driving-shaft is made in two parts having a splined connection. After meeting an obstruction, the lower unit is returned to its working position by means of a spring h acting upon an adjustable collar g<4> on the steering-rod g.
