Abstract

1474670 Inboard-outboard propulsion units CHRYSLER CORP 9 May 1975 [23 Sept 1974] 19667/75 Heading B7V The outboard power leg 24 of an inboardoutboard propulsion unit is pivotally mounted between the arms 72 of a yoke 68 so as to be tiltable about a horizontal axis and a central leg 70 of the yoke 68 is rotatably journalled in a cast mounting 46 and carries a tiller arm 90 for steering. The mounting 46 is fixed to the transom 12 of a craft and supports the drive shaft 28 of the craft's engine. The drive shaft 28 has a double universal joint 34 having its centre substantially at the intersection of the steering and tilt axes defined by the yoke 68. A pair of hydraulic cylinders 82, (84) for tilting the part 24 are attached to each side respectively of the outboard leg 24 and to a member 86 which pivots about an axis 88 coaxial with the leg 70 of yoke 68. The outboard leg 24 includes a vertical drive shaft whose lower end carries a bevel gear meshing with a similar gear connected to a propellor and whose upper end rotatably carries two bevel gears meshing with a bevel gear on the after end of the drive shaft 28. An axially slidable clutch member is arranged on this vertical drive shaft and is engageable with either one of the two bevel gears for forward or reverse propulsive drive. Engine exhaust passes through the outboard leg 24 via a connection 62 and duct 64.
