Abstract

986,095. Bow-jet rudder. F. W. PLEUGER. March 26, 1964 [March 30, 1963], No. 12850/64. Heading B7V. A driving device for a propulsion unit arranged in a transverse passage 1 of a vessel comprises a propulsion unit supported by hollow struts 3 along the central axis of the passage, a driving motor 14 in the interior of the vessel, an endless chain 11 extending through the struts and transmitting the drive from the motor to the unit and deflecting pulleys 12 provided in the interior of the ship. The chain 11 extends over a chain pinion 13 mounted on the shaft of the motor 14, over pulley 12 and through struts 3 to a sprocket wheel 10 rigidly connected to the hollow propeller shaft 21. Each propeller blade has a bevel wheel 27 meshing with a wheel 28 secured to one end of a control shaft 29, the other end of which carries a chain wheel 30. The wheel 30 is connected to a pinion 33 adjacent pinion 13 on the shaft of the driving motor by a chain 31 which runs over deflecting pulleys 34 adjacent the pulleys 12 and also over deflecting pulleys 35 on an arm 36 pivotally mounted on the shaft of the motor 14 and swingable to either side by means of a threaded spindle 37. When the spindle 37 is operated to move the arm 36 over to one side, the pulleys 35 move to displace the chain 31, causing the wheel 30 to change the angular position of control shaft 29 relative to the propeller shaft 21 and hence movement of the gears 28, 27, which movement is transmitted to the propeller blades 26 to change the angle of pitch thereof.
