Driving-arrangements for screw propellers; steering and manoeuvring by screw propellers; shafts, arrangement of.-In twin screw vessels, the propulsive effects of the screws or paddle wheels are controlled from a central station for steering and manoeuvring, and the propeller shafts are not parallel, the outboard ends being closer together than at the inboard ends. Shafts n', n<2>, Fig. 1<c>, carrying propellers q', q<2> and being driven by motors m<1>, m<2> are set out of parallel. The throttles or other speed and power control member of the engines, or the controls of variable pitch propellers or variable speed gears are adapted to be actuated by levers g<1>, g<2> Fig. 2, which are coupled by rods d<1>, d<2> to nuts o', o<2> on screws s<1>, s<2> that are rotatable in opposite directions by the worm and worm gear b, c<1>, c<2>, which is actuated by gearing from a handwheel I. On rotating the handwheel the controls g, g<2> are moved oppositely and the unequal efforts of the propellers results in the ships being moved on a new course. The screw shafts s', s<2> are slidably mounted in the worm wheels c<1>, c<2>, and are supported on a carrier w which which may be moved by the rack and pinion gear p from a second handwheel II. Movement of the carrier causes the levers g', g<2> to be moved together in the same direction, whereby the ship is speeded up or reversed without effect ing the steering. The arrangement is also adapted for depth control of submarines.
