Abstract

1,107,461. Screw propellers. VICKERS Ltd. 1 Feb., 1965 [31 Oct., 1963], No. 43100/63. Heading B7V. A propulsion unit for a ship includes a propeller shaft (supported in a streamlined sponson or housing 15) adapted to be driven by a driving mechanism (not shown), a propeller 11 (having blades 18, 19 and a hub 20) mounted on the shaft, and a tube 23 within which the propeller and shaft are located, the propeller and shaft being removable from the tube transversely of the tube axis (they are shown extracted in Fig. 2). The sponson 15 is mounted on a frame structure 16 by a column 17. The frame structure is formed with a flange 22 for engaging a flange 34 on the tube, the under surface of the frame structure being dished to form part of the inner surface of the tube. The unit may be mounted transversely in the slip to move the latter to one side or the other or be mounted fore-and-aft to provide forward propulsion. The driving mechanism may drive the propeller either clockwise or anticlockwise and the propeller blades may be fixed, or be of adjustable or of variable pitch.
