Abstract

1,244,586. Steering by water jet. HYDROVAC Inc. 25 Feb., 1970 [25 Feb., 1969], No. 9111/70. Heading B7V. A barge or like vessel is steered by a waterjet apparatus 10, Fig. 2, comprising a transverse tube 17 open at each end to apertures 28, Fig. 3, in the barge bottom in a compartment at the bow of the barge, propellers 38, 39 in the tube being driven by a motor 33, e.g. an I.C. engine. Flow is reversed by reversing the rotation of shaft 32 by gear-box 34, or by using variable pitch propellers. Shrouds 43, e.g. of neoprene, surround the propellers, and fixed vanes 48 support shaft bearing 31 and guide the flow between the propellers. Protective grilles are located in the tube openings, Fig. 5 (not shown). One steerable barge may be located at the front of a group of barges pushed by a tug, Fig. 1 (not shown).
