1327003 Propelling ships E M O MAMEDOV V D BASHUN A A ROMADIN and V A KHVOSTOV 10 March 1972 11215/72 Heading B7V Water-jet propulsion apparatus comprises impellers 3, 4 within a casing 2 which has an inlet 8, protected by grating 9, and an outlet nozzle 11 which directs the water through a chamber 10. The chamber 10 has an outlet aperture 13 opposite nozzle 11 and containing a rudder 21 by which it may be completely closed and a further outlet aperture 12 containing a rotatable ring 14 provided with guide vanes 15, the arrangement being such that for ahead propulsion and steering, rudder 21 is in a more or less fore and aft plane but for astern manoevering, aperture 13 is closed by rudder 21 and ring 14 is rotated so that vanes 15 direct water towards the bow of the vessel. Rudder 21 may be operated by rack and pinion gears, the rack being part of the piston of an hydraulic jack. Ring 14 may be operated by an hydraulic motor via reduction gearing.
