Abstract

1,184,536. Water jet apparatus. TAMCO Ltd. 2 April, 1968 [7 June, 1967], No. 15864/68. Heading B7V. A water jet propulsion unit with a rotatable outlet nozzle has a steering system comprising a first and second hydraulic cylinder connected to a pump via respective valves and acting on respective steering means. The nozzle is steered by rotation of shaft 24. A bell-crank housing 26 is connected to shaft 24 and has a cylinder 28 pivoted to one arm. The rod 50 of cylinder 28 is secured by flange 52 to the boat transom. A pinion 32 is secured to shaft 24 and meshes with rack 34 which is connected to a rod of cylinder 30 mounted on bell-crank housing 26. Valves 36, 40 control flow of hydraulic fluid to the cylinders from circuit 44 containing pump 46, and vice versa. The valves are controlled by linkage 38 and lever 48 operated manually. Rotation of housing 26 steers the boat, operation of rack 34 reverses it.
