Abstract

947,500. Propelling and steering ships. R. KORT. Nov. 23, 1960 [Nov. 26, 1959], No. 40339/60. Heading B7V. A ship is steered and propelled by a screw propeller 6 rotating inside a nozzle ring 12 and directly connected to the rotor 1 of an hydraulic motor inside a water-tight pearshaped housing 2 of circular cross-section, the housing and the nozzle ring being arranged so that water continuously accelerates over the housing and through the nozzle ring to the propeller. The housing is rigidly fastened to the nozzle ring by struts 13, 14 and the unit, comprising the nozzle ring, the housing and the propeller may be turned about a vertical axis passing perpendicularly to the propeller axis and through the plane of the propeller disc, in a ball-bearing 15, 16, by a steering motor 17 and chain drive 19. Alternatively, the unit may be carried on a rudder shaft, with another bearing at the bottom of the unit and a heelpiece extension. The driving liquid passes through ducts 10, 11 inside the ship, a junction box 9, and ducts 7, 8 fixed with the unit passing through the ball-bearing and the strut 14 to the motor.
