953,976. Boat propulsion and steering. J. M. ROBSON. Feb. 27, 1963 [March 19, 1962], No. 10345/62. Heading B7V. A device for manually steering and propelling a boat B includes a propeller 5, a tiller 7, means (pitman 10 and crank 6) for converting vertical oscillation of the tiller into rotation of the propeller, and means (frame 2 supported by pintles 3 in eyes 1 on the stem or side of the boat) for converting lateral movement of the tiller into lateral pivoting of the axis (4) of the propeller. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 the frame includes a tube 13 in which the pitman 10 is accommodated and the propeller shaft is formed with a double crank 14 journalled in a bearing frame 15 forming an extension of the tube. The bearing frame may be adjustable about the axis of the tube 13 and the pitman 10 may consist of two parts with a coupling allowing relative rotation of the parts about their common axis. Hence although stern mounting is shown, the device may be mounted on the side of the boat.
