Abstract

[Also in Divisions F1 and F4] A propulsion unit for a water-borne craft includes a propeller 6 lodged within a nozzle 7 that contains an annular space 15 between coaxial inner and outer walls 12, 13, in which space a liquid e.g. water, lubricating oil or fuel, that is employed in an I.C. engine (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), for driving the propeller is cooled. The nozzle includes a hollow mounting-member 18 that is attached to a hollow body 8, which is rotatable about a vertical axis so as to effect steering of the craft and includes a pair of passages 25, 26 Fig. 4, connecting similar passages 21 (23), Fig. 3 (not shown), within the member 18 to the engine and a pump (27), respectively, the latter passages being such that the liquid flows from one to the other in a circumferential direction through said space. Preferably, the nozzle is made of a material e.g. an aluminium alloy, having good thermal conductivity, and comprises a casting 11 and an annular member 14 that abuts the free ends of the walls 12, 13. The engine may be situated either inboard or outboard of the craft.
